Dr Michael Ottley

Dr Michael Ottley is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in adult hip joint disorders. His practice offers a comprehensive spectrum of alternatives for the management of people suffering from hip joint conditions, including hip joint arthroscopy, hip joint preservation surgery, hip resurfacing and hip replacement procedures (both primary and revision). 

 

Dr Ottley obtained his medical degree from the University of Bristol (United Kingdom) in 2000, graduating with Honours. During his time in Bristol he also obtained an intercalated degree in Pathology, again awarded with Honours. Following internship, Dr Ottley relocated to Queensland and began working and training in surgery in both regional and metropolitan centres throughout Queensland.

 

Working purely in Orthopaedics for over 15 years has allowed Dr Ottley to gain wide and in-depth experience in all areas of Orthopaedic surgery including the management of complex trauma and elective orthopaedics. He obtained his Fellowship in Orthopaedic surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2010.

 

Dr Ottley has undertaken advanced training as Clinical Fellow to Professor Fares Haddad, an internationally recognised expert in hip and knee surgery at the University College Hospital London, England. His work there included the treatment of complex hip and knee conditions including: primary hip joint and revision hip joint replacement, hip resurfacing arthroplasty, young adult hip surgery including hip arthroscopy, primary and revision knee joint replacement, knee ligament reconstruction, osteotomy techniques and the management of sports injuries of the hip and knee in elite athletes.

 

Upon return from Fellowship training Dr Ottley worked in public practice at the Prince Charles Hospital and later at the Ipswich Hospital.

 

In 2013 Dr Ottley established private practice working extensively in the surgical management and care of patients with both general and complex conditions of the hip and knee joint.

 

Since joining the Brisbane Hip Clinic in 2020, Dr Ottley further advanced his ability to offer first class and world leading treatment options and service to his patients, as well as deepening his already significant interest in the area of hip joint surgery. 

 

Currently Dr Ottley holds appointmenst as a Visting Orthopaedic Surgeon at Brisbane Private Hospital and St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital. 

 

Dr Ottley is committed to the advancement of orthopaedics and is involved in clinical research in the areas of hip surgery with multiple papers published in local and international peer-review journals. Dr Ottley has delivered and co-authored presentations on hip and knee topics at state and national orthopaedic meetings. 

 

Dr Ottley also continues to act as an expert peer reviewer in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery for Clinical Case Reports Journal, an International Publication. This involves assessing, screening and improving the quality of orthopaedic research articles before they are published.

 

Dr Ottley is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA). 

 

Dr Ottley is also a Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics with the University of Queensland and taught regularly for the Diploma of Orthopaedic Surgical Anatomy at Queensland University of Technology’s Medical Engineering Research Facility. Other work interests include teaching medical students, junior doctors and training future orthopaedic surgeons.

 

Outside of work he enjoys fitness training, cycling and spending time with his family.
